MRZ reader: why the bottom two lines matter
The MRZ (Machine-Readable Zone) is the block of letters, digits and chevrons printed across the bottom of a passport or ID card. It follows the fixed-width ICAO 9303 format, which makes it far more reliable to read than the styled text above it: every field sits at a known position and carries its own check digit. An online MRZ reader decodes that structure instead of guessing at free-form text.
This tool decodes the MRZ with code, not with the AI: it checks the check digit of each date and of the document number, and only uses what adds up. If the AI misread an MRZ value, the validated reading wins. That's the difference between OCR that transcribes an ID card and a scanner you can put in front of a check-in desk or a KYC file.

Is this passport scanner free?
Yes — no signup, no card, no trial period. There's a limit of 2 pages per document and a daily limit per IP address so the tool stays available for everyone.
Does it read the MRZ?
Yes. When the machine-readable zone is in the image, dates, document number and nationality are decoded from it with code and their check digits are validated; only values that add up are used. It does not compare the MRZ with the data printed on the front.
How does an MRZ check digit work?
Each MRZ check digit is calculated from the characters before it: digits keep their value, letters A–Z count as 10–35 and the filler « < » counts as 0. Each value is multiplied by the repeating weights 7, 3, 1, the results are added up, and the check digit is that sum modulo 10. This tool recalculates it for the document number, date of birth and expiry date; a value whose check digit does not match is not used.
Which documents are supported?
National ID cards (DNI, carta d'identità, cartão de cidadão), passports, residence permits and most government-issued photo IDs, whether the data is printed, in MRZ format, or both.
Is this an identity verification service?
No, and the distinction matters. This tool extracts the data from a document. It does not check whether the document is authentic or whether the person presenting it is its rightful holder — that's a separate, regulated process.
Is my document stored?
