What this ID and passport scanner reads

Upload a photo or a PDF of an ID card or a passport and the AI returns the data as text — both the fields printed on the front and the machine-readable zone across the bottom.

  • Given names and surname
  • Document number
  • Date of birth
  • Expiry date
  • Issuing country and nationality
  • Sex
  • Document type — ID card, passport, residence permit
  • The full MRZ lines, decoded field by field

MRZ reader: why the bottom two lines matter

The MRZ (Machine-Readable Zone) is the block of letters, digits and chevrons printed across the bottom of a passport or ID card. It follows the fixed-width ICAO 9303 format, which makes it far more reliable to read than the styled text above it: every field sits at a known position and carries its own check digit. An online MRZ reader decodes that structure instead of guessing at free-form text.

This tool reads both layers and cross-checks them, so the document number taken from the MRZ can be verified against the one printed on the front. That's the difference between an OCR that transcribes a card and a scanner you can put in front of a check-in or a KYC file — the field that gets copied into a contract is the one that was verified twice.

Where an online ID scanner fits

  • Hotel and vacation-rental check-in, including guest registration for SES.Hospedajes in Spain
  • Real estate — identifying a tenant or a buyer before anything gets signed
  • Gestorías and agencies opening a client file without a data-entry bottleneck
  • KYC onboarding, wherever a document number and expiry date have to be recorded exactly
  • Any desk where passport numbers are currently typed by hand

Frequently asked questions

Is this passport scanner free?

Yes — no signup, no card, no trial period. There's a limit of 2 pages per document and a daily limit per IP address so the tool stays available for everyone.

Does it read the MRZ?

Yes. The machine-readable zone is decoded field by field and cross-checked against the data printed on the front of the document, which is the most reliable way to capture a document number or an expiry date.

Which documents are supported?

National ID cards (DNI, carta d'identità, cartão de cidadão), passports, residence permits and most government-issued photo IDs, whether the data is printed, in MRZ format, or both.

Is this an identity verification service?

No, and the distinction matters. This tool extracts the data from a document. It does not check whether the document is authentic or whether the person presenting it is its rightful holder — that's a separate, regulated process.

Is my document stored?

The file is processed to extract the data and is not published or shared. If you're going to identify people regularly, read our guide on storing ID copies under GDPR before you build a permanent archive: extraction and long-term storage follow different rules.

Can I do this over WhatsApp instead?

Yes — that's the full product. With a free account you photograph an ID and send it over WhatsApp, and the structured data comes back without anyone opening a laptop or installing an app.

Registering guests or clients every day?

This free demo reads one document at a time. A free WhappScan account lets your team send IDs, passports and invoices over WhatsApp and get the fields back structured, ready for your check-in or client file.
